ketogenic diet

what is nutritional ketosis?

Nutritional ketosis is a state of health in which your body burns fat as its primary energy source instead of glucose. When you follow a keto diet you essentially become a “fat burner” instead of a “sugar burner”.  Your body becomes less dependent on food and is able to use stored body fat as a fuel source. This is why the ketogenic diet tends to minimizes hunger levels and sugar cravings. Most people also experience an increase in energy, mental clarity, athletic endurance and feelings of euphoria.

The ketogenic state is accomplished by reducing your consumption of carbohydrates, increasing your intake of fat and consuming only adequate amounts of protein. It takes the body time to convert into a ketogenic, "fat-burning" state. The length of time will vary but the typical adaptation period can range anywhere from 2-6 weeks. The keto diet is a purposeful manipulation of the body’s metabolism and therefore should always be done with close monitoring by a registered dietitian.
